COVID-19 Update (January 2021)

Friends of the Victorian Society,

As a historian of American history, I often research and write about people who have lived through significant moments in history – events that had far-reaching impacts on American society. Today, we are living through our own cataclysmic event, one that has already claimed over two million lives worldwide and profoundly disrupted our sense of togetherness. The opportunity to interact with our members is something we hold dear at the Victorian Society – to be together with other passionate, creative people enjoying amazing architecture, art, and design from the Victorian Era and beyond. However, with the safety of our participants, volunteers, and staff in mind, we have decided that these in-person experiences need to wait another year. As a result, our Summer Schools in London, Newport, and Chicago and our Study Tours in Denver and Cleveland have been postponed until 2022.

We are here for you during this period of social distancing. Over the past year, we have heard from our members that they have been enjoying past issues of Nineteenth Century magazine, reading recent Victorian Society Book Award Winners, participating in virtual programs, and a few who have taken on new restoration projects in their Victorian homes! This year, we will be offering new content on our website and more virtual programming, including a lecture series that kicks off this winter. We will also continue to alert you by email of upcoming virtual programs by our chapters and partners across the country. If you hear of something interesting, please be sure to send us a note. While online events are not the same as experiencing a private interior on one of our Study Tours or attending a great lecture at one of our three Summer Schools, they will help keep us engaged and connected until we can be together again.

If you have any questions or concerns as it relates to our plans, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at president@victoriansociety.org. I look forward to “seeing” you at an upcoming virtual event.
